Sensor Measurement & Specification

Magellan MX Weather Stations incorporate the following sensors depending on the model. Click to expand for specific sensor and measurement details.

Wind speed and direction measurements are provided via an ultrasonic sensor. An electronic compass provides apparent wind measurements. GPS provides true wind and other features.

For installations subject to extreme winter weather, a heated sensor unit is available for MX 500, 501 and 600 models.

Wind Speed
Range: 0 to 134 mph (0 to 60 m/s)
Accuracy: ±3% 0.02 mph to 90 mph (±3% 0.01 m/s to 40 m/s), ±5% above 90 mph and up to 134 mph (40 m/s and up to 60 m/s)
Resolution: 0.02 mph (0.01 m/s)
Units Available: knots, mph, km/hr, m/s

Wind Direction
Measurement Range: 0-359°
Measurement Range: 0-359° Accuracy: ± 3° 0.02 mph to 90 mph (0.01 m/s to 40 m/s), ±5° above 90 mph and up to 134 mph (40 m/s and up to 60 m/s)
Resolution: 1°
Units: Degrees

An integrated optical rain gauge that automatically senses water hitting its outside surface and provides measurements based on the size and number of drops. Algorithms interpret this data and simulate the output of a tipping bucket rain gauge. The optical rain gauge has no moving parts associated with tipping bucket gauges.

This rain gauge is best used for mobile and portable applications for general monitoring such as recording rain event and duration. For higher resolution and accuracy requirements, please consider the Pulsar or Orion weather stations. See: Rain/Precipitation Measurement Technologies.

Precipitation
Resolution: 0.003 inches (0.08 mm)
Range: 0 to >12 inches/hr
Precipitation Intensity: 0 to 5.90 inches/hour (0 to 150 mm/hour)
Units Available: mm, inches

A combined instrument mounted inside three double louvered, naturally aspirated radiation shields with no moving parts. The results are high performance across each measurement over long periods of time.

Barometric Pressure

Range: 8.85 – 32.48 inHg (300 - 1100 hPa)
Accuracy: ±0.015 inHg (±0.5 hPa) @ 77°F (25°C)
Resolution: 0.003 inHg (0.1 hPa)
Units Available: kPa, hPa, mbar, inHg

Relative Humidity
Range: 0-100%
Resolution: 1%
Accuracy: ± 2% @ 68°F (10%-90% RH)
Units: % Rh

Temperature
Range: -40 to +158°F (-40 to +70°C)
Accuracy: ±0.54°F @ 68°F (±0.3°C @ 20°C)
Resolution: 0.18°F (0.1°C)
Units: °C, °F

Magellan MX Weather Station model 501 incorporates a silicon photodiode radiation sensor in the all-in-one sensor configuration including wind speed/direction, air pressure, temperature, relative humidity, compass and GPS.
