Both wind speed and direction are measured using an advanced ultrasonic sensor. The sensor uses ultrasound to determine horizontal wind speed and direction. The array of three equally spaced ultrasonic transducers on a horizontal plane is an ideal design which ensures accurate wind measurement from all wind directions, without blind angles or corrupted readings.
The wind sensor has no moving parts, which makes it maintenance free. The measurement range for wind speed is from 0 to 134 mph (0 to 60 m/s) and for wind direction from 0 to 360°.
Range: 0-135mph (0-60 m/s)
Accuracy: ±3% at 10 m/s
Resolution: 0.1 mph (0.1 m/s)
Units Available: knots, mph, km/hr, m/s
Units Available: ° Azimuth
Height: 139 mm (5.17")
Diameter: 127 mm (5.00")
Weight: 510 g (1.12 lbs)
Optional sensors of Solar Radiation, Photosynthetically Active Radiation, Visibility, and up to two additional Temperatures can be connected via the Weather MicroServer.

Communication connection options between sensor head and monitoring device. Click heading to expand for details.
Included with the Orion LT Weather Station is a 50-foot section of sensor cable which connects to the Interface Module.
A standard 7-foot serial communication cable connects the Interface Module to a computer or display console. Extra length RS-232 cable is available up to 200 feet, catalog number 8233.
For lengths from 200 to 4000 feet, refer to the RS-485 Short Haul Modem option below.
Wireless transceivers offer a cable-free means to remotely monitor weather information when hardwire installations are not feasible or practical.
For fixed-mount weather stations, 2.4 GHz and 900MHz wireless transceiver options offer outdoor line-of-site range at one mile and 20 miles, respectively.
For the wireless Orion Weather Station, a transceiver is housed in a weatherproof enclosure near the sensor head. A single transceiver is connected to the Interface Module at the data display site, which then is connected to a Weather Display Console and/or computer.
These stations require power at the site of the weatherproof enclosure. This power can be AC, battery or solar. The Orion sensor head requires significantly less power and is a good choice for solar or battery-powered operation.
A wireless weather station system configuration would include the weather station itself with display or software, plus a weatherproof enclosure and transceivers.
2.4 GHz: FCC (USA), IC (Canada) and ETSI (Europe).
900 MHz: FCC and IC

This device connects the weather station to a Local Area Network (LAN). At the monitoring computer a driver creates a virtual serial port and converts the data to be read by the available terminal program or weather software such as Weather Master or WeatherView 32.
For weather monitoring applications situated in a large facility such as an industrial plant or hospital, instead of running miles of cable from the weather station on the roof to a computer on the first floor, users can take advantage of existing LAN cables to hook up.
This device provides for the flexibility of placing the weather station anywhere close to an Ethernet connection.
Includes a power supply, driver and Ethernet cable.
Catalog Number 8248
Two RS-485 converters are used to extend the RS-232 range from 200 feet to 4000 feet. Includes power supplies.
Order cable by the foot, catalog number 8230.

Seagulls seem to be inordinately fond of the ultrasonic transducers on the Orion Weather Stations.
To discourage pecking and nesting we offer this Bird Spike Kit.
Designed not to hurt the birds, the spikes provide a barrier to make it more difficult for birds to land on top of the transmitter.
This option is highly recommended for coastal environments.

The sensor head is one of the most fragile components of an all-in-one weather station, and frequently the one subject to the most abuse -- especially in portable and mobile installations. In addition to our standard one-year warranty which is included with the purchase price, we offer Extended Standard and "No-Fault" Warranties on the Orion Sensor Module.
The Free One-Year Standard Factory Warranty and the Extended Standard Factory Warranty do NOT cover damage due to normal wear and tear, exceptional operating conditions, negligent handling or installation, or unauthorized modifications.
The No-Fault Warranty covers repair service fees, parts and material that are not covered under the Standard Warranty. This includes damages caused by negligent handling or installation, as well as Acts of God.
Warranty service options can only be purchased with new orders.
