Container Port

Kingston Freeport Terminal Ltd., Jamaica

“During my research, I found Columbia Weather Systems offered detailed yet simple information about their Weather Monitoring solutions.” Christopher Gayle, Environmental Specialist at Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited, gave us insight to how recently installed Capricorn FLX™ Weather Stations are an important element of operations at the terminal. “The stations are currently utilized to monitor weather conditions at the terminal to inform various aspects of our operations on a 24-hour basis.”

Situated at one of the world’s largest natural harbors, Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited operates as the largest container handling facility in the Caribbean, facilitating the import and export of goods to and from Jamaica with over 1,000 containers delivered weekly according to their website. Monitoring on-site meteorological parameters is valuable on several levels. Christopher explained:

Wind speed / gusts - This informs activation of our in-house high wind procedure which is based on OEM operating thresholds for Container Handling Equipment (e.g. STS Cranes and Straddle Carriers).

Temperature / Heat Index - The majority of our staff members perform tasks outdoors on a 24-hour basis, and having visibility on this key parameter will inform preventative measures (more frequent breaks/ increased hydration) to prevent risk of heat stroke among the team.

Wind Direction - This parameter is important to assist in Emergency Response to Chemical Releases and Air Quality Nuisances originated on and off-site.

“The experience so far has been great, we are still in the early phase of usage and will engage with the CWS team to ensure we are maximizing on the full potential of the system. It was relatively easy to setup by our IT team and our local weather service, Meteorological Service of Jamaica,” Christopher added.

The Capricorn FLX™ Weather Station is especially well-suited for installations requiring individual sensors for optimal sensor placement. For more info, visit the links on the column to the right.
